Monotypes offer the opportunity for control to meet chance, and pulling the print is always a surprise. A gift. Lines and shapes — form and value — are what hold my curiosity and keep me observant.

When I look at artwork, lines in particular carry the evidence of movement. Hands recorded in the materials. What is left in the end, whether on canvas, paper, stone or clay, is a remnant of the process: time; direction; pressure. The human mark.

Why a diptych or triptych

There is both a visual and conceptual appeal of bringing separate but related parts together to form a whole.

Sometimes the individual segments are used to carry a narrative or create a sequence. And sometimes they offer a commonality that shows various elements or facets of a larger idea.

As the viewer’s eyes move from one area to another, they are required to gather the pieces, and bring them together as one. The gathering presents a design challenge, and offers to broaden their interpretation of the work.
